Would you say say friendship is especially important in a long distance relationship?

In a long-distance relationship, where two people can only see each other, say, 4 times a year for a total of 5-6 weeks (on their breaks, basically), would you say it is ESPECIALLY important to have a real friendship? Because obviously, if there isn’t a true and real friendship, everything would fall apart right away since there’s no physically being in each others presence for so long. Do you agree?

(The other 48 or so weeks, the two talk with a microphone and with webcamera).
